The much looked forward to higher education exhibition in the south of the island, Future Minds Galle, got underway here today on 9th September at the Galle Town Hall.
The exhibition was declared open by the Chief Guest, Honourable Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training, Chandima Weerakkody.
The minister, speaking to the gathering said that certain career counselling entities recommend various programmes that offer certificates and students produces bundles of certificates when they come for job interviews but these certificates hold no value at all for the potential employers. The minister made a request to the student community to evaluate the “employability factor” of any courses they wish to follow due to this fact.
The minister explained about the 10 + one programme initiated by the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training to address most of these issues that the students are facing. He also revealed that the ministry will launch an online system that will have the function of checking qualifications for their “employability factor” for a specific industry.
Further speaking, minister Weerakkody said that global demand for pilots is going to go up to beyond 500,000 and also that the global job opportunities will reach 80 million. The minister stressed that Sri Lankans must get ready to take hold of this global opportunity and focus strongly on employability. The biggest foreign exchange earner for Sri Lanka at the moment is foreign employment and sadly this comprises largely of domestic aides and the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training is working very hard to change this status quo, the minister articulated.
The minister was full of praise for Future Minds for the selfless social service that it carries out, especially for the Galle edition even without any sizable margin and wished great success for the 2017 edition.
Future Minds 2017 Galle Edition will be conducted from Sept 9 to 10 at Gall Town Hall and will feature the much sought-after Career Counselling Sessions with, psychometric tests, one-on-one General Counselling and one-on-one Corporate Counselling which will be an invaluable opportunity for the southern students.
